The World Series of Fighting took to the PNE Agrodome in Vancouver, Canada for WSOF 7. The main event would see a champion crowned, as Georgi Karakhanyan picked up the strap with a slick guillotine submission victory over Lance Palmer. In other main card action, Jesse Taylor, Nick Newell, and Kalib Starnes picked up wins on the NBC Sports Network card.
Karakhanyan Submits Palmer for Title
The WSOF crowned their second champion tonight as the featherweight crown was doled out to Georgi Karakhanyan in tonight’s main event. Karakhanyan controlled the striking game against opponent Lance Palmer but would get the victory on the canvas. While Palmer appeared to have the advantage on the ground, Karakhanyan turned the tables on the prospect with a slick guillotine choke of the Team Alpha Male fighter in the third round.
The Russo-Armenian fighter has now won nine in a row since he lost to Bellator MMA standout Patricio Freire in 2011. Karakhanyan is now the first featherweight champion in WSOF history and will await for the emergence of his next opponent and first title defense. Meanwhile, the loss drops Palmer to 7-1 but the prospect should bounce back after taking this fight on short notice.
Taylor Defeats Mutapcic, Advances to Middleweight Final
It was a match several months in the making after the bizarre events at WSOF 6 but Jesse Taylor and Elvis Mutapcic finally met in the cage tonight in Vancouver. Taylor fought the middleweight semifinal in a conservative but rather dominant manner by using his wrestling and strength to mostly stifle Mutapcic’s offense. The former MFC champ would have his moments but was unable to really settle in against the former TUF finalist. Taylor will now face David Branch for the WSOF middleweight title some time in 2014.
Newell Notches Quick Submission Victory
Nick Newell did it again tonight in Vancouver as he secured a slick guillotine choke victory to defeat Sabah Fadai. The one-armed fighter set up the choke by shooting in for a takedown against the cage. Newell quickly secured a guillotine choke when Fadai tried to head fight and exposed his neck. Newell got the quick tap and will likely seem him face the winner of WSOF’s 8 main event between Justin Gaethje and Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante for the WSOF title.
