Once upon a time in the year 2009, Miguel Torres was one of the baddest dudes on the planet. He was a WEC champ, had lost only once in 37 fights (!), and had the kind of hype surrounding him that’s usually only reserved for supernatural beings and aliens. Torres was king of the little guys.
But then suddenly Father Time caught up with him, and he began losing. Losing a lot, and losing hard. Soon he was gone from the spotlight, and in recent years was left to eke out a meager existence in the wilds of fringe combat sports events. Case in point: a kickboxing bout last night, which was broadcast on AXS-TV, and which featured Torres’ knee taking a kick and coming apart at the seams.
Knowing when to call it quits is the sad plight of every top fighter whose tasted glory and greatness and longs for that flavor in their mouth once more. It’s also the sad plight of every fan to have to watch that individual literally kill himself one joint or concussion at a time.
Please, if someone out their knows Miguel, please stop him from getting into the ring or cage again. It’s something that must be done.
