Sadly, Bigger Does Not Always Equal Better

When MMA was in its infancy, the notion of separating fighters into different weight classes was something scoffed at, so we often saw massive sumo wrestlers lumbering into the cage to take on much smaller opponents. Then came the Unified Rules, and now we have little guys fighting little guys, medium-sized guys fighting medium-sized guys, and so on. But what happened to the ultra-big, gigantic, insanely huge dudes? Did the advent of weight classes run them out of the sport?

Yeah, pretty much. But like the great white whale Moby Dick, they’re sometimes spotted out in the wild.

The video below captures one such creature in action. And though the bout lasts only seconds, it’s more than enough to remind us that great girth alone ain’t enough to cut it in mixed martial arts.
