Sad news out of Washington State, as an amateur MMA fighter who fought on Saturday night died this morning, allegedly as a result of kidney failure.
Local news outlet KBKW has the details:
The Mixed Martial Arts fighter that collapsed during a kickboxing event at the South Shore Mall Saturday night passed away Monday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle due to kidney failure.
The man had a lot of family and we are not releasing a name until we have confirmation from his wife that everyone has been notified.
Event Coordinator Scott Bean tells us the Aberdeen man had finished his fight Saturday and was in the changing room as the next fight was wrapping up.
In Washington State – as in other many other states around the country – amateur MMA is completely legal but completely unregulated, so medical screening before and after fights is often lacking in comparison to how professional fighters are treated. It’s unclear if that played a factor in the fighter’s death, but it couldn’t have helped.
