Welcome to CagedInsider’s coverage of Invicta FC 16 – the grittiest, realist all-female MMA promotion this side of the Pacific Ocean.
We pick up with the scrap between Roxanne Modafferi and DeAnna Bennett, because, well, you probably don’t know and don’t care about the less-than-famous women that fought early on the card.
The bout starts with Modafferi taking the center of the cage and winging punches and kicks. Bennett fires back, but the TUF vet scores, and even knocks her on her butt when she’s off-balance. Midway through the round Bennett clinches, lifts “Roxy” up and drops her to the canvas, and for the rest of the period she attempt to work some ground and pound while dodging trouble from Modafferi’s very active guard.
Roxy wastes no time reclaiming the center of the cage in Round 2, and she does well keeping Bennett against the cage and on the end of her punches, with one particular left really connecting. Bennett lobs some bolos herself, forcing Modafferi to backpedal at points, but her only takedown attempt is stuffed, so if anyone takes the round, it’s Modafferi.
It’s more of the same in the third round, only this time Modafferi adds a bunch more kicks into her output, and that seems to give Bennett pause. With a minute and a half left in the round blood starts to flow from Bennett’s nose, and despite landing a few kicks to the body, it’s obvious she’s unable to solve the riddle Modafferi has presented to her. The horn sounds with Bennett struggling to get a takedown and Roxy resisting.
Result: Roxanne Modafferi def. DeAnna Bennett via Split Decision
