Feudal Japan was a rough place to live. You had bandits to deal with, and if you were a lowly peasant and not a samurai, you were pretty much at the mercy of anyone with a sword and skill to use it. But the Japanese are a resilient people, and armed themselves with unarmed combat techniques that at the very least gave them a fighting chance.
Thankfully, archaeologists have uncovered some ancient scrolls from that era, and these things often do, the scrolls list some viable self-defense techniques. Since karate master Lyoto Machida is fighting tonight at UFC Fight Night 36, it might be worthwhile to reproduce these priceless artifacts right here, because hey, maybe “The Dragon” will employ these very same moves!
