The much anticipated showdown between boxing’s two biggest stars, Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao, may be finally coming together.
“We’re making progress,” a source said, described as “a boxing authority involved with the talks” by the Los Angeles Times.
A bout between Mayweather and Pacquiao has been sought after by fans for years. But it’s never quite come to pass — a victim of a series of disputes between the fighters’ management, disagreement about drug testing protocol, and of course, the fighters’ pay.
Now, it is said, both sides have agreed on several issues.
The venue of the proposed fight has been agreed upon: the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. (Previous negotiations included such ideas as the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, or even the building of a new arena.)
The drug testing protocolo, which is said to have derailed the bout back in 2010, has also been discussed, and an agreement is said to have been reached. No details were available.
It is also said that the bout would happen as soon as May or June. Mayweather has a tradition of scheduling his bouts on Cinco de Mayo weekend — which is also being sought after for another boxing mega-bout, between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto.
Mayweather and Pacquiao are said to be continuing to discuss the split of the purse.
The unnamed source for the report spoke to the press on condition of anonymity, as it is said no one involved is authorized to speak publicly on the negotiations.
