His style of doing just enough to win served him well over the years – and even earned him a UFC championship belt – but nowadays the pendulum has swung the other way for Benson Henderson, and now he struggles to get a win in Bellator.
This past weekend, at Bellator 183, Henderson took on Patricky Friere in the main event, and as per usual, the former UFC champ took his foe to a decision. But for all his high-level experience and ability, Henderson couldn’t stop himself from winding up on the wrong end of a split decision… and that’s not good.
He’s now 1-3 since coming to Bellator. Granted, he’s fought the absolute best the organization has to offer in Patricky and Patricio Friere, Michael Chandler and Andrey Koureshkov, and there’s no shame in losing to them. But when Henderson entered free agency after his UFC contract expired, expectations were higher in regards to what more had to give in the cage. Is this it, though?
After the dust settled at Bellator 183, Henderson commented about not letting his fights be so close. I think the real question is: what next for someone whose best days might be gone?
