Some MMA fans have evinced frustration with the current MMA scene, and the new emphasis on lighter weight divisions.
These folks miss the old days — where the big boys led the way in show after show. Sure there’s a ton of great talent out there from 125 lbs to 155 lbs. But there’ something about the aesthetic of two huge athletes — the kind of guys who attract everyone’s attention before they even begin fighting.
You know, like a 6’7″ Russian bad-ass? Or, a 6’5″ Frenchman of African extraction, who looks like he was carved from onyx.
And… wouldn’t you know it? It’s a guy who loves his spectacles, Scott Coker, and Bellator to the rescue tonight!
Tonight’s Bellator 139 features Cheick Kongo facing former Bellator heavyweight champion Alexander Volkov in a pivotal match for the promotion’s heavyweight division.
Kongo is coming a split decision loss to Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal at Bellator 134 back in February; that loss broke a two fight winning streak. He’s best known for a long run with the UFC, where he scored wins over the likes of Mirko Cro Cop and Matt Mitrione. Now 40, Kongo could position himself as the next contender to Bellator heavyweight titlist Vitaly Minakov.
Volkov also lost a decision in his last bout, but previously had enjoyed five consecutive wins — including the Bellator Season 10 tournament last year. Just 26, Volkov could earn a rematch with the man who lifted his Bellator title with a win tonight.
Also on the card is a middleweight bout between kickboxing standout Joe Schilling and Hisaki Kato; and also a bout between former featherweight titlist Pat Curran and Emmanuel Sanchez. The show will be broadcast on Spike TV at 9 pm ET.
