Did you know? Scott Coker’s new-look Bellator MMA rolls on tonight with a pretty nice-looking event from the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.
It’s what Coker dubbed the British Invasion, as three of the UK’s top MMA talents will fight on the main card, including a light heavyweight title bout.
The main event sees England’s Liam McGeary challenging Emanuel Newton of the US for the gold at 205 lbs.
“I am going to become the first Englishmen to win a major title in America tomorrow,” McGeary would say after the weigh-in. “I put the work in. I have sacrificed too much to come up short. I have a great team behind me.”
The other two Brits sound confident too. Paul Daley is making his return to American MMA as he takes on Brazil’s Andre Santos at welter. The always colorful Daley said of Santos: “He’s going to get sparked out.”
Linton Vassell represents the UK vs. Rameau Sokoudjou in another light heavyweight attraction. The PRIDE and UFC vet Sokoudjou is 2-0 in his brief Bellator run, while Vassell looks to get back in the win column after his first loss in the last five years. That loss came to Bellator titlist Newton.
Also on the show is a heavyweight attraction between Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal and Cheick Kongo.
Lawal (pictured above, right) weighed in at 217 yesterday to Kongo’s 239 (pictured above, left) — but he’s not worried about the size difference.
“I train hard and smart,” the former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion said in a brief interview yesterday. “I have seen everything there is to see in this game. My camp was great.”
The event will be televised on SPIKE TV at 9 pm ET/PT.
