Yesterday, Bellator promised a big announcement in an email blitz to media.
That email featured a picture of a hand (clad in a Bellator-branded MMA glove) holding a stick of dynamite — and warned “you don’t want to miss this…”
And… well, glad I didn’t.
Bellator MMA looks to bring back the wild one night tournaments of MMA’s early days this September, with a light heavyweight tourney featuring some of the promotion’s biggest names on tap.
The tournament, said to feature the Bellator debut of Phil Davis, will decide the division’s #1 contender. Other participants were listed as Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal, Linton Vassell, and former Bellator titlist Emanuel Newton.
Oh — and that dynamite in the graphic, as it turns out, was a nod to the old K-1 Dynamite! shows of Japan’s golden age in MMA — events which featured a mix of kickboxing and MMA. So, in the same September event, Bellator will co-promote with GLORY kickboxing for the first time, with bouts lined up for Joe Schilling and Paul Daley. Opponents for the two, who have also successfully competed in MMA, have yet to be announced.
The night’s main event will be light heavyweight title bout between the strangely resurgent Tito Ortiz and Bellator titlist Liam McGeary.
“I’m so proud and honored to bring this truly amazing event to my hometown of San Jose,” said Scott Coker, President of Bellator MMA, in a statement. “This mega-card will feature something for every combat sports fan- MMA legends, rising stars, a stacked tournament, plus many of the world’s best kickboxers. It will be an unforgettable night for the thousands in attendance and the millions watching at home.”
The event will take place at the SAP Center in San Jose.
