Bellator is coming to New York City’s Madison Square Garden for the first time on June 24, and yes, this is a very big deal.
Regardless of the UFC already popping that MSG cherry, and the WSOF and a handful of amateur MMA events that have taken place in the Garden’s smaller venue (The Theater), it’s a big deal for the number two MMA organization out there to hold an event in the Big Apple’s most recognizable sports venue.
For one, it further establishes Bellator’s place in the market, because booking the arena in MSG isn’t something just anyone can (or should) do.
But it also means we’re going to get to see the absolute best Bellator has to offer. After all, those seats at MSG ain’t going to fill themselves – those fans are only going to show up when the product is top notch. Promoter Scott Coker knows this, and so we’ve got a ton of recognizable names – like Chael Sonnen, Fedor Emelianenko, Wanderlei Silva, etc. – mixed in with actual top-level killers still in their prime (like Ryan Bader, Michael Chandler, Lorenz Larkin and Douglas Lima).
Ultimately, being at MSG for the first time means Bellator is going to be at its best – and that’s great for the fans.
