Bellator 97: Douglas Lima Injured Again, Rematch With Ben Saunders Postponed

Bellator has lost one of it’s more compelling fights that was scheduled for this summer, as former tourney winner Douglas Lima has announced that he’s been injured again, and as a result, he will not fight UFC vet Ben Saunders on July 31st. The fight had been part of the Bellator 97 line-up and is to determine the Season 8 welterweight tourney winner.

Lima, who knocked out Saunders at Bellator 57 in 2011 to win that tourney, announced the unfortunate news via Twitter:

Very unlucky with these back to back injuries but the fight is off for July. I’m injured again. Hope to get back training in no time.

As of Wednesday AM, Bellator has not made any announcement regarding the injury or whether Saunders will still compete on the card. According to a report from, Lima was forced to withdraw from the bout due to torn cartilage in his ribs.

Lima knocked out Bryan Baker back in February to entrench another fight with Saunders, however, the finale was delayed because he broke his hand in the fight. Saunders is also coming off a KO win at Bellator 90, has he stopped Raul Amaya with a head kick in his semifinals bout.

Thankfully,  Bellator 97 still features a lightweight bout between champion Michael Chandler and David Rickels, and a welterweight tilt between champ Ben Askren and Andrey Koreshkov. The event will take place in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
