Welcome to CagedInsider’s coverage of Bellator 180/Bellator NYC, a SpikeTV and pay-per-view extravaganza coming to us from Madison Square Garden in New York City. This monumental event has got some heroes from days of yore on the card, like Wanderlei Silva and Fedor Emelianenko, but it’s got some contemporary studs too, like Lorenz Larkin and Michael Chandler.
First up: pro boxer Heather Hardy against ham-and-egger Alice Yauger.
Round 1 has these ladies doing what they do best – for Hardy, that means utilizing her boxing skills to dodge punches and keep chipping away with her overhand right; for Yauger, that means fighting a superior boxer with boxing, and not really going for any takedowns. To her credit, Yauger bangs Hardy up with kicks and knees, which make it seem like Hardy is having to work for this.
The second sees Yauger make Hardy bloody (and make Hardy’s mascara run, which is the first time I’ve ever seen that in an MMA fight). The pro boxer absorbs it all, and dishes it out with even greater ferocity, and by the end of the round, Yauger is starting to really drag ass.
The third round has Hardy just pouring on the pressure with her fists, which eventually has Yauger bleeding and going for a takedown. Hardy shrugs it out, but they clash heads and now it’s Hardy’s turn to bleed. They pause for the doctor to check out the cut, and when they resume, Hardy drops Yauger with a combo. Yauger gets back up, but it’s Punch City time, and soon she’s TKO’d.
