Once again, Ryan Couture proves that his last name is bigger than his abilities.
Stepping into the Bellator cage to face longtime top competitor Patricky “Pitbull” Freire, the onus was on Couture to avoid the Brazilian’s heavy hands and tight jiu-jitsu while implementing his own game plan. And it wasn’t outside of the realm of possibility that he could do it – Couture is a veteran in the sport, and though his record is peppered with losses, rarely has he been stopped.
But Couture has never been able to establish himself among the elite, and Pitbull is one of the elite.
In the opening minutes of the first round, the two men engaged in a careful, thoughtful striking contest, with Couture stalking his foe around the cage, catching a kick to put Freire on his butt, and throwing leather where he could.
On the other side of the coin, Pitbull was busy gauging range and distance – which, at the three-minute mark, he apparently found.
It was a perfectly-timed left hook on the chin that caught Couture as he was coming in, and the American was suddenly face-down on the canvas and out cold.
It was a good win for Pitbull. As for Couture, well, it’s doubtful he’ll ever remember much from this night.
