Bellator 140 Lima vs. Koreshkov Tonight: Why To Watch

The UFC has kept a torrid pace lately — with three shows in the last week and one more to come tomorrow.

So perhaps you’ve forgotten about that other big North American promotion, despite its record breaking event last month. Bellator’s Shamrock vs. Kimbo bout peaked at a huge 2.4 million viewers.

Tonight, Bellator MMA soldiers on with show number 140, and tonight may be a night to remember, as Douglas Lima defends his Bellator welterweight title for the first time against Andrey Koreshkov.

Back in April, the knockout artist Lima earned the Bellator belt by defeating perennial contender Rick Hawn by TKO. The bout marked only the second loss via stoppage for Hawn in his 21 bout career. (The only other loss inside the distance for Hawn was a submission at the hands of Michael Chandler.)

The bout was the fifth straight victory for the Brazilian-American Lima, who has gone 13-1 in the last six years; his only loss coming to Ben Askren.

Lima’s opponent tonight is Andrey Koreshkov, a 24 year old native of Siberia who has enjoyed a 17-1 overall record in MMA since turning pro in 2010. A striker, Koreshkov has scored knockouts via knee and flying knee in two of his last three bouts. The only blemish on his record also came at the hands of Ben Askren, back in 2013. Among his his big wins are a 2012 victory over Lyman Good, who enjoyed a successful UFC debut this week.

So, there you have it. A champion with “cold, killer instinct” as Bellator commentator Jimmy Smith remarks in this highlight video, against another potent striker, with 30 wins over the last six years and only losses to Ben Askren. Not too shabby!

Bellator 140 starts at 9 pm ET at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT; and will be televised on Spike TV 9/8 Central.
