Bellator MMA has announced that the promotion’s 100th event will go down September 20th in Phoenix, and that the card will feature the twice postponed, welterweight finale between Douglas Lima and Ben Saunders. In addition, the event will feature the opening round of Bellator’s Season 9 welterweight competition, which will include UFC vets Matt Riddle and “War Machine.”
Lima (24-5) and Saunders (16-5-2) were supposed to fight much earlier in the year, after they scored KO wins over Bryan Baker and Raul Amaya in their respective semifinal bouts on February 21st. Problem was, Lima broke his hand during his bout with Baker, and their finale was postponed until Bellator 97 (which takes place next Wednesday). Lima hurt his rib heading into the bout, however, and the fight was pushed to Bellator 100.
“I can’t wait for this fight,” Lima said in the official announcement. “I have been injured back to back, but this time I’ll be 100% and we going to have one of the best fights of the year. I am ready to fight for the belt and I am coming hard!”
Saunder and Lima fought in a welterweight finale back in November, 2011, and Lima took the bout by stopping the TUF vet in the second round. The only man to defeat Lima in four fights since the encounter is Bellator welterweight champ Ben Askren. Saunders, meanwhile, has gone 4-1 since their first encounter.
The promotion has also announced the opening round match-ups for its next welterweight tourney, which will feature Brent Weedman (21-8-1) vs. Justin Baesman (14-3), War Machine (13-4) vs. Vaughn Anderson (16-1-1), Matt Riddle (7-3) vs. Sergio Junior (29-11) and Mark Scanlon (9-2) vs. Herman Terrado (11-2).
Bellator 100 will be hosted by Phoenix’s Grand Canyon University Arena and will be broadcast live on SPIKE.
